Personal Relationships in the Workplace

Revision Date: January 2023

Personal relationships between non-supervisory co-workers are discouraged, although permitted provided they are consensual and do not adversely affect the work performance of the parties or their co-workers. Because of concerns about favoritism and harassment, supervisors, and managers are strictly prohibited from dating or engaging in any kind of personal relationship with any employee of KBP.

Employment of family members and relatives will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In no case may a family member supervise the work of another family member, nor may one family member be employed in a position where they could affect the compensation or advancement of the other.

Consensual Relationships

To ensure romantic relationships that develop do not create risk and conflict, employees who enter such relationships must affirm and comply with the following as a condition of continued employment.

  • Employees must notify Human Resources immediately of a relationship that has developed.
  • Depending on the circumstances, employees may need to be reassigned, transferred, and/or enter into a consensual relationship agreement as determined by KBP.
  • Adults, defined as those 18 and above, are strictly prohibited from engaging in romantic or dating relationships with minors, defined as those under 18 years of age.
  • Failure to report consensual relationships under this policy may result in discipline up to and including termination for both parties.
